OUR FRIEND THE MOON – VARANASI 2015

In 2015 we were lucky to be part of the film project Our Friend the Moon, a piece directed by Velasco Broca, which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and won the Malaga Film Festival and the Bafici for Best Short Film in 2017. The vast majority of the film, was filmed in locations in Varanasi or Benares (India), a holy city of Hinduism and undoubtedly one of the most magical and mystical places in the world.

Considered as the oldest continuously populated city in the world, hundreds of temples dedicated to countless diverse gods are scattered throughout its hidden streets.

Frenetic street markets followed one after another with the most varied shops and stalls are the heart of the city. And the ghats, the neighborhoods that face the Ganges river, concentrate the essence of Benares in a few meters.

Despite the complexity of filming in 16mm B/W with 50’s Bolex rope cameras, the experience was truly amazing and fun. You could write a book with all the stories of how we search for the locations, managed the permits, bought props and configured the cast.
